Carp Lake Open 2nd January 2008 - 2008/01/02 23:55

Can I take this opportunity, on behalf of Ian, to wish friends old and new a very Happy New Year.

The New Year got off to a flying start on the Carp Lake with the normal open turning into a Golden Peg Match due to the number of anglers making themselves available. Ian drew the number for the Golden Peg (26) and Dark Horse got the luck of the draw.

Keith was soon into a fish feeding maggot and fishing corn on a waggler and after 20 minutes he had 15lb in his keepnet.

Not far behind him was the master himself on Peg 21. Ian had managed to snare a couple of Crucians fishing maggot over 6mm pellets and also loose feeding maggot.

As the day wore on Keith was catching at regular intervals but Ian had changed tactics and was fishing with a hair rigged banded pellet which proved fruitful in fooling a couple of big carp.

Then out of nowhere Lewis Spink on Peg 24 started to entice fish into his keepnet fishing 8mm strawberry flavoured pellets hair rigged on a bomb. The feeding method was 8mm pellets in PVA bags. The fact that Lewis had not caught a fish for the first 2.75 hours didn't bother him as he caught steadily until the whistle at 3.30pm

The final result was in the balance right up to the end with Ian losing three double figure fish in the final 30 minutes

1st Keith Moore 70lb 6oz Peg 26 (Golden Peg)
2nd Lewis Spink 64lb 4oz Peg 24
3rd Ian Heaps 44lb 2oz Peg 21

So at the first attempt in this year the Golden Peg was gone and Dark Horse went home with a massive grin on his face and £269.50 in his wallet. He received a terrific round of applause from all participants on the day and in my opinion was a very worthy winner.

The Golden Peg now stands at £220 and hopefully will be contested on Sunday 13th January 2008.
