It was a welcome change to have glorious sunshine on Saturday for the 7th annual "Gadgers" Match, held on all 3 lakes. As explained at the draw by Andy Phyllis, the name Gadger is a Yorkshire term for a mate or good friend. Many years ago Andy and his Gadger Graham attended a teach in at Holgan Farm and at the end of each days fishing they held a 2 man match between the pair of them. Graham never uses a pole and was soundly beaten every day by Andy using the pole. Graham then christened poles "cheating sticks" and claimed that he wouldn't be beaten if a match was fished using only rod and reel. Thus the "Gadgers Match" was born and poles are left in the car for the day. Incidentally, Graham is still waiting to win his first "Gadgers Match". The match as the name suggests is always fished in a friendly manner except for a short period after the draw when certain anglers parenthood is called into question. 36 anglers fished on all three lakes with the winning overall weight becoming the new "Gadgers Champion". Fishing turned out to be rock hard after a heavy frost the night before with most anglers waiting long periods without a bite. The Carp Lake fished well below its capability with 2 dry nets at the weigh in but top honours went to Isaac Ward on peg 14 with a total weight of 39-8, an outstanding achievement from a 14 year old. No one expects huge weights from the Tench Lake at this time of the year but Jim Hutton took top honours with a catch of 30-8, almost double the runners up weight of 18-12 by Neil Morgan making a welcome return to the fishery. Across on the Match Lake a masterclass was taking place on peg 4 where Nobby was showing that old age is no barrier when it comes to fishing by using banded white pellet on the tip, alternating between the sunken island and deep water to put together a weight of 49-3 to take the top prize. My natural modesty and charm forbids me from writing any more on this act of sheer genius. A good days fishing with some old and new friends, the match was fished in the spirit that was intended and at the end of the day the best man won. Final placings are as follows: Carp Lake 1st Isaac Ward 39-8 2nd Ritchie Lines 32-4 3rd Hughie Fennell 31-4 4th Mel Wilkins 31-2
Tench Lake 1st Jim Hutton 30-8 2nd Neil Morgan 18-12 3rd Ian Heaps 12-12 4th Self Cocker 8-8
Match Lake 1st Nobby 49-3 2nd Mark Close 43-8 3rd Dark Horse 42-14 4th Neil Daniels 23-2
Heaviest fish caught on Saturday and Sunday was a 13-12 Carp caught by 13 year old George Woodhead on the Match Lake and won a state of the art boxed centre pin reel kindly donated by Paul Morgan Next year will be the 8th annual "Gadgers" Match, our thanks to both Andy and Graham for their continued sponsorship of this event.
